Director of Seed Genetics and Research

Location: Flexible within Western Canada (Regina is corporate office)

Our client, (FP Genetics) is one of the most progressive seed companies in Canada. They are expanding and require a new member on the Senior Management Team.  As the Director of Seed Genetics and Research you will help evaluate, acquire and produce new seed varieties.

In this role, you will hire, develop and lead your team of seed researchers and seed production experts.  You and your team will be responsible for:

  • evaluating and selecting which lines to invest in,
  • developing agreements and bids to gain access to these lines,
  • variety testing and assessment,
  • oversight on higher generation seed production by shareholders,
  • breeder seed allocation, contra season production if necessary,
  • variety registration.

You will influence which varieties FP Genetics will bring to the Canadian market, and through this, you will be integral to the long-term success of the company. Enjoy a senior role and the freedom to operate within a nimble non-bureaucratic and highly regarded seed company.

As Director of Seed Genetics and Research you will foster relationships with private and publicly funded seed breeders in Canada, (and around the world).  This will allow you to identify high potential lines and help you negotiate licensing agreements. Then, you will lead the team of researchers who will manage the pre-market testing, registration trials and parent seed production of your new varieties.

To be considered for this role, you absolutely must be able to communicate credibly with the seed breeding community about their research programs, the latest breeding technology and the germplasm that is being developed.  Therefore, you must have closely related work experience and a Master's Degree or a PhD in a closely related field.  In addition to this, our ideal candidate is a great communicator (at all levels), and has people leadership and program management experience.
